Faculty Adviser: Professor Edward T. Swaine
Professor Swaine teaches and writes in the areas of international law, foreign relations law, international antitrust, and contracts. He is the co-author of Foreign Relations and National Security Law: Cases, Materials and Simulations (4th ed. 2011) (with Franck, Glennon, and Murphy) and has published work in the American Journal of International Law, Columbia Law Review, Duke Law Journal, Harvard International Law Journal, Stanford Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Virginia Journal of International Law, William and Mary Law Review, and Yale Journal of International Law, among others. He has consulted on matters involving treaty law, antitrust, intellectual property, and international litigation and arbitration.
Professor Swaine joined the GW faculty in 2006, after serving as the Counselor on International Law at the U.S. Department of State. His prior academic appointment was as an Associate Professor (with tenure) at the Wharton School, with a secondary appointment at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Before entering academia, Professor Swaine practiced law at the Brussels office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton, where his work focused on European Community law and antitrust, and served as a member of the civil appellate staff at the U.S. Department of Justice. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal, and Harvard College.
Professor Swaine is a reporter for the American Law Institute’s Restatement of the Law (Fourth), Foreign Relations Law of the United States, and an elected member of the American Law Institute. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Public International Law for the U.S. State Department, a past member of the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law, and former co-chair of the International Law in Domestic Groups interest group. At GW, Professor Swaine has served as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of the Competition Law Center.
